US Lifts Refugee Ban From 11 Countries

The United States announced Monday it was lifting its ban on refugees from 11 “high-risk” countries, but said those seeking to enter the US would come under much tougher scrutiny than in the past.

Applicants from 11 countries, unnamed but understood to include 10 Muslim-majority nations plus North Korea, will face tougher “risk-based” assessments to be accepted.

“It’s critically important that we know who is entering the United States,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

“These additional security measures will make it harder for bad actors to exploit our refugee program, and they will ensure we take a more risk-based approach to protecting the homeland.”

$50m Worth Of Gold Bars, Coins Found In US Ocean

More than $50 million worth of gold bars, coins and dust that’s been described as the greatest lost treasure in US history is about to make its public debut in California after sitting at the bottom of the ocean for more than 150 years.

The 3,100 gold coins, 45 gold bars and more than 36 kilograms of gold dust recovered from the wreckage of the S.S. Central America steamship are now sitting in a makeshift laboratory just south of Los Angeles.

Bob Evans, the chief scientist on the original voyage that discovered the shipwreck and its treasure in 1988, is now painstakingly cleaning each piece of gold by hand, soaking it in a solution and brushing off rust and grime that accumulated as the treasure sat 2,134 meters below sea level.

“This is a whole new season of discovery,” Evans told The Associated Press this week from the laboratory in Santa Ana. “We are now peering beneath the grime and the rust that is on the coins, removing those objects and those substances and getting to look at the treasure as it was in 1857.”

The Central America was laden with booty from the California Gold Rush when it sank in a hurricane off the coast of South Carolina in 1857. Four hundred and twenty-five people drowned and thousands of pounds of California gold were lost, contributing to an economic panic.

Indian Bride-To-Be Films Herself Taking Poison

A bride-to-be has filmed herself fatally drinking poison and sent the clip to her ex-boyfriend after he allegedly blackmailed her.

The young woman, named as Nisha Devidas, is seen drinking a thick black substance in the video at her home in the village of Rohini in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

She was ten days away from getting married to a man unnamed in reports when she died.

Her brother Ravi Kavle claims she was sick of being blackmailed by her ex-boyfriend Nikhil Borkar and decided to take her own life.

She was discovered by an unknown person and rushed to the District General Hospital in Bhandara but was declared dead on arrival.

Her grieving brother Ravi was quoted by local media as saying: 'My sister's wedding was due on February 4 but she embraced death just ten days before her marriage.

'A youth named Nikhil Borkar is responsible for my sister's death. He lured my sister on the pretext of marriage, then used her and started blackmailing her.

He said his sister took her own life because she was 'fed up and defeated' and he demanded that Nikhil should be 'immediately arrested'.

Police say they are investigating. It was not clear whether they had interviewed Mr Borkar.

The nature of the alleged blackmail was not stated. May her soul rest in peace.

103-Year-Old Mumbai Woman Gets Her Hip Replaced

Ganga Gala, a 103-year-old from Mulund, has become one of the oldest patients in the world  to undergo a successful hip replacement surgery.

Ganga suffered a hip fracture on January 5 after falling from the bed. Her grandson Kirti, 60, said it was the seventh time she had fallen since July 2016.

She was hospitalised — the family claims for the first time in her life and doctors took the decision to go ahead with surgery because all her health parameters were normal.

“Before July 2016, she didn’t need help to walk or do her daily activities. She even washed her own clothes and utensils. But after the last fall, she became immobile. It was too painful for her to even sleep,” said Kirti.

The family decided to take her to a hospital, but Ganga was adamant she did not need to go. “She hated going to a hospital because she has never been hospitalised. Even our family physician suggested against it,” Kriti said.

However, the family decided to get her admitted because they couldn’t bear to see her in pain and approached Dr Tejas Upasani, orthopaedic and computer-assisted joint replacement surgeon from Upasani Hospital, Mulund. Upasani had also operated on Ganga’s son, Hirji, two years ago, at the age of 85, successfully.

After a battery of tests, Upasani decided to do the surgery. “Apart from her fracture and partial hearing loss, the patient didn’t have any other medical complication such as blood sugar or cardiac anomalies, which is why we decided to operate,” said Upasani, who says he has operated on a 100-year-old patient in the past.

Ganga had suffered an intertrochanteric (upper part of the thigh bone) fracture, on the right side of hip. Doctors said avoiding the surgery could result in other complications like bed sores, chest infection and urine infection.

“Since her bone structure was slightly weak due to the age, we used special implants meant for osteoporosis (condition in which bones become weak and brittle) patients. It was teamwork. Our anaesthetists took extreme precaution with the dosage, physicians and intensivists, who handled the Intensive Care Units (ICU) worked in line to provide a new lease of life to the patient,” Upasani said.

After the surgery, Ganga was able to sit and sleep on the bed without assistance. Doctors said the implants will help hold her bone structure and the fracture will heal within two months.

Ganga’s PAN card says she was born in January 1915. She is the matriarch of a 80-member family. “We are really happy she is getting better and not in pain now,” Kirti said.

Boy, 3, Strangled To Death By Own T-shirt

A toddler was strangled by his own T-shirt after it got caught at the top of slide he was playing on in his back garden. Blake William Graves, three, died in hospital the day after the accident at his family home in Crook, Co Durham.

An inquest heard how his T-Shirt snagged on a screw that was protruding just 6mm after it had been used to fix a handle.

As the toddler tried to slide down his top caught and put pressure on his neck which stopped him breathing.

The three-year-old had been playing in the front garden of his family home on July last year with his little sister and mum.

The three went to the back garden before the mum took the girl inside where she watched Blake from a window, where her view was sometimes obscured by a dog kennel.

Detective Inspector Neil Jones told the hearing, at Crook Civic Centre, that Blake’s death was a tragic accident.

CCTV footage from a neighbouring property showed Blake had been in the rear garden just short of 20 minutes before his mother ran out of the side door of the house into the back garden.

She was then seen carrying the boy, who was not breathing and no longer wearing his top, in her arms.

She called for a help and a neighbour tried to resuscitate him before an ambulance arrived and took him to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough.

He died there in the early hours of the following morning.

Det Insp Jones said: “What was quite clear was the slide is a good few years old, with wear and tear it had been knocked about a bit and many repairs had been cobbled together to keep it going for the kids to play on.

“The one remaining handle is where the repair had been done.

“I understand why, with a wood screw, to keep the handle sturdy for children climbing up to grab onto.

“Unfortunately, the screw protruded 6mm from the original area.”

The inquest heard that the slide was designed to have countersunk fixings so originally everything would have been smooth so there was nothing clothing could be snagged on.

On the day of the tragedy, the back of the slide was lifted slightly off the ground using a child’s trampoline as the youngsters had previously used it to slide into a paddling pool at the bottom.

Det Insp Jones said unfortunately the elevated degree would have increased the pressure from Blake’s bodyweight.

Jeremy Chipperfield, the senior coroner for the County Durham and Darlington, said a post-mortem examination showed Blake was a healthy boy who died as a result of asphyxiation and pressure to the neck.

Floyd Mayweather Shows Off $100m Cheque He Earned From Conor McGregor Fight

Floyd Mayweather rarely misses chances to brag about his remarkable achievements in boxing, or show off his incredible wealth and he produced another example last night.

Last August, Mayweather defeated Conor McGregor in a much-hyped Las Vegas fight, taking his all-time boxing career record to 50 wins and zero defeats.

The clash was a money-spinner the likes of which had not been seen in the sport before - and the end result was demonstrated in black and white by Mayweather.

On Instagram, he posted an image of the cheque for $100million he had earned from the fight, claiming it to be the ultimate proof that he has the 'Midas touch'.

He said: 'Some say there’s a difference between being smart and intelligent. Everyone knows that common sense isn’t so common, but when it comes to being wise beyond years it’s proven I’ve got the Midas touch.

'It’s simple math, being 50-0 lets you know I READ my opponents just as clear as you can READ this $100,000,000 check. I stay getting checks like this, I will always have the last laugh!'

The LCC said in a statement on Friday that the upward review of the tolls followed “extensive consultations held with stakeholders in the Eti-Osa/Lekki-Epe Expressway of Lagos State.

Kylie Jenner Is Building A MEGA Mansion In Los Angeles

She was spotted walking around a construction site with mum Kris and best friend Jordyn on Wednesday.

But Kylie Jenner, 20, wasn't using the rubble-filled site as a good place to stretch her legs - instead she was reportedly overseeing her new property being built in the Hidden Hills of Los Angeles, a gated community where she already owns a home.

According to TMZ, the expectant mum is set to house her first child in a decadent mansion, with building permits suggesting the value of the job to be over $2.37m (£1.91m).

The site obtained the building permits to the impeding property issued in December, which reportedly boasts a 9,187 sq. ft. first floor and 5,304 sq. ft. second floor, with two massive garages attached.

The permits also suggest there will be a 1,836 sq. ft. of covered porches as well as a cabana for the pool. Older permits for a retaining wall and foundation were also cited, with adjustments to the building likely to cause the $2.37m cost to rise.

Kylie previously owned a $1.7m (£1.20m) decadent mansion in the exclusive Californian area, which other stars, such as Miley Cyrus and Drake call home.

Bill Cosby Performs For The First Time Since Rape Saga

Accused rapist Bill Cosby was back on the stage Monday in his first public performance in more than two years, as he regaled the crowd with stories, sang and played the drums at a jazz club in his native Philadelphia.

'I used to be a comedian,' Cosby, 80, said in a dialogue with a son of one of the musicians before a welcoming crowd at LaRose Jazz Club, in what was his first advertised outing since May 2015, when he had to prematurely end a comedy tour due to protesters repeatedly showing to his gigs.

Cosby, clad in a grey hooded sweatshirt that read, 'Hello Friend,' was accompanied by his rep Andrew Wyatt.

The surprise appearance was announced in a statement released by his camp earlier Monday, that read, 'Bill Cosby will honor his fans with a historic performance with the Tony Williams Jazz Quartet and he will be performing a special comedy concert that will culminate the evening.'

The announcement was met with a predominantly negative reaction from social media users in the form of memes and one-liners referencing the accusations made against him by around 60 women, who say The Cosby Show star drugged and then sexually assaulted them in incidents dating back decades. Cosby has denied all of the accusations, but people still think he shouldn't perform.

Dog Shoots Owner During Hunting Trip In Russia

A hunter has been fatally shot by his own dog in a freak accident in Russia. The 64-year-old man, who local media identified as Sergei Terekhov, had gone hunting with his brother in a remote area in the Saratov region near the Volga river, according to the regional investigative committee.

The tragic turn of events occurred when Mr Terekhov went to let two Estonian hounds out of his Lada car. Quoting an investigator, local news site Region 64 reported that Mr Terekhov's double-barrelled shotgun had been resting against his knee and was pointing toward him.

As his brother looked on, one of the dogs jumped toward Mr Terekhov and hit the trigger with its paw, discharging the gun into the hunter's abdomen.

His brother drove him to the hospital, but he died of his wounds on the way.

A pretty experienced hunter died,” investigator Alexander Galanin said. “He was sober and had a gun licence. Everything was in order. It was an accident.”

Photographs from Mr Terekhov's page on the Odnoklassniki social network showed he was an avid sportsman who loved hunting rabbits. In one of them, he posed next to two rabbit carcasses with a shotgun and a dog.

The outraged visitors, students from the University of Bologna, said they ordered three steaks and fried fish at the Osteria da Luca near St Mark's Square.

With only glasses of water to accompany their modest meal, the group was left shocked by their €1,145 bill on Friday.

Marco Gasparinetti, the head of the April 25 civil rights group, said the students made a formal complaint soon after their visit to the restaurant.

The case, which Gasparinetti said was simply 'yet another' in a series of tourist rip-offs is so egregious that it has prompted a response from the city's mayor.

Luigi Brugnaro wrote on Twitter that he will attempt to verify the incident.

He added: 'If this shameful episode is confirmed, we will do all we can to punish those responsible. We are for justice, always!'

The owner of the restaurant, however, said simply: 'I do not remember having problems with Japanese customers these days.'

US Government In Shutdown After Senate Fails To Pass New Budget

The US government has started to shut down after Congress failed to overcome a bitter standoff over spending and immigration, marking a choatic end to Donald Trump's first year as president.

Last-minute negotiations crumbled as Senate Democrats blocked a four-week stopgap extension in a late-night vote, causing the fourth government shutdown in a quarter of a century.

Social Security and most other safety net programmes are unaffected by the lapse in federal spending authority. Critical government functions will continue, with uniformed service members, health inspectors and law enforcement officers set to work without pay. But if no deal is brokered before Monday, two million federal employees will be furloughed – given leave of absence.

Most staff in the departments of housing, environment, education and commerce will stay at home. Half of workers in the treasury, health, defence and transportation departments will also not be going to work next week.

National parks and monuments face closure while visa and passport processing could be delayed.

Essential services that protect "life or human property" will continue, including national security, postal services, air traffic control, inpatient medical services, emergency outpatient medicine, disaster assistance, prisons, taxation and electricity generation.

A team of researchers at Stanford University in the US has developed a computer program that can predict when a hospital patient will die with unnerving level of accuracy.

According to the team, their program is right 90% of the time. It will be used to provide appropriate end-of-life car to hospital patients with a terminal disease.

The program uses artificial intelligence and was trained through analysis of 160,000 adult and child patient files from Stanford and Lucile Packard Children's hospital.

It looked at things in health records such as diagnosis, procedures performed and which medicine a patient was taking. When the algorithm was applied to 40,000 active patients (it was asked to predict which would die in the next three to twelve months) it was correct in 90% of cases.

"The scale of data available allowed us to build an all-cause mortality prediction model, instead of being disease or demographic specific," said Anand Avati, a member of Stanford University's AI Lab, reported IBTimes .

The researchers plan to continue refining the system with more data before it is rolled out to hospitals and medical staff.

Kenneth Jung, a research scientist at Stanford University said: "We think that keeping a doctor in the loop and thinking of this as 'machine learning plus the doctor' is the way to go as opposed to blindly doing medical interventions based on algorithms... that puts us on firmer ground both ethically and safety-wise"

Husband Beats Pregnant Wife To Death

A FCT High Court in Maitama on Thursday ordered the trial-within-trial in a culpable homicide charge slammed on a 37-year-old, Mathew Ankyoor, who allegedly killed his wife.

Justice Peter Affen, who gave the order, said it was necessary to ascertain the veracity of the statements made by the accused.

Ankyoor is standing trial for allegedly beating his wife to death with a three-count charge hanging around his neck.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused, who was first arraigned on Oct. 24, 2017, had pleaded not guilty.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Thursday, the Prosecuting Counsel, Mr Donatus Abah, called the first prosecution witness (PW1), Insp. Raymond Isama of the Homicide Section of the FCT Police Command.

The witness told the court that the case was transferred from the Lugbe Division of the command to the homicide section and was assigned to him to investigate.

He said Ankyoor had written the statement without coercion, adding that he (Isama) took both the accused and the statement to a superior officer where the document was signed and countered-signed.

The witness added that the accused voluntarily signed the statement before the superior officer, while he (Isama) countered-signed.

Isama  had also informed the court that he visited the scene of the crime as well as Wuse General Hospital, where a pathologist removed the baby inside the womb of the deceased, Mrs Doosuur Ankyoor.

He said that he took the photographs of the baby, who also died in the process of being removed from its dead mother’s womb.

NAN reports that the photographs were admitted as exhibits as the defence counsel did not object to its admissibility.

There was a mild drama as an argument ensued between the two counsel when Abah sought to tender the accused person’s statement as exhibit before the judge.

The Defendant’s Counsel, Mr John Godwin had objected to its admissibility on the grounds that it was contrary to Section 29 of the Evidence Act.

Godwin said the statement was not voluntarily made by the accused, adding that he was “tortured, coerced and intimidated into writing the statement”.

Arguing on point of law, the prosecuting counsel, insisted that the statement was admissible, adding that the defence counsel’s objection was only a ploy to delay the trial.

The judge, after entertaining the witness’ submission and arguments from both counsel, ordered a trial-within-trial to ascertain the veracity of Ankyoor’s claim.

He case was adjourned until Feb.19.
