Man To Die By Hanging For Beating Mother To Death

A Plateau High Court sitting in Jos has sentenced a 24-year-old man, Godwin Banchir, to death by hanging for beating his 65-year-old mother to death.

Justice Daniel Longji pronounced the sentence after finding Banchir guilty of killing his mother.

The News Agency of Nigeria quoted the judge as saying while pronouncing the judgement, “Going by the findings of this court, you, Godwin Banchir, mercilessly took the life of your mother, Mrs Saratu Banchir, in cold blood.

“This sentence is mandatory, as the law states that any person convicted of murder shall be punished with death by hanging.

“The sentence of this court upon you is that you, Godwin Banchir, will be hanged until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul.”

Banchir, in his confessional statement, stated that he returned from the farm and found his mother sitting in the compound but when he greeted her, she ignored him.

This, he said, infuriated him and he picked up a stick and hit her.

He stated, “I got angry when she did not respond to my greetings, so I picked up the handle of an axe and hit her around the ribs.

“She fell down and started shouting, which attracted our neighbours, who came to beat me up and later took me to the police station.

“I had been having misunderstandings with my mother. Each time I returned from the farm, she would not cook for me on time, and she always quarrelled with me whenever I wanted to bathe with the water she fetched from the stream.

“Her actions always annoyed me. I did not know that she was going to die from the beating she received from me.”

I Killed My Ex, Becus My Brother Wanted Her- Suspect

Sixteen-year-old Idrisu Muhammadu of Evutagi village in the Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State has been arrested for allegedly killing one Fatima Isah of the same address.

Muhammadu allegedly killed his girlfriend for having an affair with his elder brother.

It was learnt that the suspect allegedly killed his former lover after her father, Isah Evutagi, decided to give his daughter’s hand in marriage to another man.

Northern City News gathering on Tuesday indicated that Muhammadu had earlier threatened to kill his victim if she did not marry him.

It was learnt that the father of the deceased reported the threat to the police about three years ago.

The suspect told our correspondent that he and his elder brother had been contending for Fatimah’s love.

He stated, “I told my brother to leave Fatimah for me because I planned to marry her, but he would not listen to me and he kept on seeing her until one day, I lost my temper and killed her.

“Look at what it has resulted to; I am now a murderer. I am going to spend all my life in jail from the age of 16; it is unfortunate.”

The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, Mohammad Abubakar, said the suspect had confessed that he killed his victim with a cutlass, adding that he had previously threatened to kill the lady if she did not stop seeing his brother.

The police spokesperson added that the suspect would be arraigned in court after investigation.

Policeman Kicks As Customs Officers Gun Down Wife In Lagos

The family of Patience Oni has been thrown into mourning after she was allegedly killed by officers of the Nigeria Customs Service in the Badagry area of Lagos State.

Punch Metro gathered that the Customs officers attached to the Seme Border Command, reportedly led by one Abu Yusuf, were trying to evacuate bags of smuggled rice found around the F. O. Filing Station in the Badagry area of the state on Tuesday, November 20, 2018.

Our correspondent learnt that the officers allegedly shot in the air to scare people away and to prevent the residents from disturbing the evacuation of the bags of smuggled rice.

It was gathered that Patience, who had gone to the market situated around the scene of the operation, was said to have been hit by a stray bullet allegedly fired by the officers.

The deceased’s husband, John Oni, said Patience, while struggling for life, gave a good Samaritan her phone to call him, adding that she was dead before he could get to the Badagry General Hospital.

The 45-year-old police inspector said, “A good Samaritan, who was at the scene of the incident, called to inform me that my wife had been shot. When I rushed to the scene, I was told that she was still alive and that the Customs officers had rushed her to the Badagry General Hospital. I am yet to recover from the shock of not meeting her alive when I got to the hospital.

“I learnt that the Customs officers were chasing after some smugglers carrying rice before they opened fire on some boys, who reportedly struggled with them. I was told that my wife was at the bus stop close to a filling station around the Badagry roundabout where she was hit by a stray bullet from the Customs officers’ guns.

“I want the government to help me fight for my right, because my late wife was my helper. I have four children who are still in school, and I don’t know how I will cope without her. My life is ruined.”

The deceased’s son, Liberty, said his mother was a pillar to the family, adding that the trigger-happy officers, who allegedly killed her, must be prosecuted.

The deceased’s elder sister, Ruth, 38, said Patience’s death was untimely, adding that the family wanted justice but did not know how to get it.

Brazil's 200-Year-Old Museum Hit By Huge Fire

A fire has gutted the National Museum of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, the oldest scientific institution in the country.

Most of the 20 million items it contained, including the oldest human remains ever found in the Americas, are believed to have been destroyed.

The cause of the blaze is not known. No injuries have been reported.

The museum, located in a building that once served as the residence for the Portuguese royal family, celebrated its 200th anniversary this year.

The fire started on Sunday evening, after the facility had closed for the day.

Aerial images broadcast on Brazilian television showed it spreading throughout the building.

400 Escape Libya Prison Amid Clashes In Tripoli

Some 400 prisoners have escaped from a facility near the Libyan capital Tripoli amid deadly violence between militia groups in the city, police say.

"The detainees were able to force open the doors" in order to leave the Ain Zara prison, the local police said.

They added that guards, fearing for their lives, were unable to prevent the breakout following riots at the jail.

Clashes between militias in the city have led Libya's UN-backed government to declare a state of emergency.

The incident on Sunday took place during armed violence between rival factions around the facility, which houses only male inmates.

Many of the prisoners held at the Ain Zara prison in south-east Tripoli were reportedly supporters of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, and had been found guilty of killings during the uprising against his government in 2011.

Police Uncover Plot To Assassinate Indian PM

During an investigation of Maoist links to the Koregaon-Bhima caste riots, police stumbled upon letters that point to plans to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, officials said yesterday.

Police have also released pictures of four more people involved in the Jan. 1 Koregaon-Bhima riots that left one person dead, and have appealed to the public for information on their whereabouts.

One of the incriminating letters was found in the home of Delhi-based activist Rona Wilson, who was among the five activists arrested across India June 6 as part of the probe into the riots conspiracy and "urban Maoist sympathizers."

The letter refers to a requirement of Rs. 8 crore to procure M-4 rifles and 400,000 rounds of ammunition, and speaks of "another Rajiv Gandhi-type incident."

Former Prime Minister Gandhi was killed by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam suicide bomber during his campaign for the May 1991 Lok Sabha elections in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.

The investigators also claimed that communication seized from a laptop of one of the arrested says
"Modi has successfully established BJP government in more than 15 states... if this pace continues, then it would mean immense trouble for the Maoist party on all fronts."

Accordingly, they were thinking along the lines of "another Rajiv Gandhi-type incident" by "targeting his roadshows," which they thought "could be an effective strategy."

"It sounds suicidal and there is a good chance we might fail but we feel the party must deliberate over our proposal," one of the letter reads.

The latest development follows the arrests of Wilson, who is secretary of the Committee for the Release of Political Prisoners; advocate Surendra Gadling, general secretary of the Indian Association of Peoples' Lawyers, Shoma Sen, head of the department of English at Nagpur University; Mumbai journalist and 'Vidrohi' editor Sudhir Dhawale; and Mahesh Raut, a Bharat Jan Andolan activist and former fellow at the Prime Minister's Rural Development Program in Gadchiroli.

Bridge Built By Okorocha Collapses In Owerri

The bridge at the Children’s Amusement Park located at the Ikemba Ojukwu Centre in Owerri, Imo, built by Gov. Rochas Okorocha’s administration has collapsed.

Witnesses at the scene told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Owerri on Wednesday that nobody was killed or injured in the incident.

The incident which caused pandemonium in the area, gave room for criticism by some parents whose children visited the place on May 27 during the 2018 Children’s Day Celebration.

A NAN Correspondent, who visited the scene, reports that the incident occurred after a heavy downpour on Tuesday night. The bridge, being a major tourism site, has been used to generate funds for the state government.

When contacted, the State Commissioner for Happiness and Purpose Fulfillment, Mrs Ogechi Ololo, told NAN that she had yet to be briefed on the cause of the incident.

Mr Collins Ibe, who witnessed the incident, told NAN that the windstorm that accompanied the downpour might be responsible for the collapsed of the bridge.

Another witness, Mrs Mary Nlemadim, said: “It is unfortunate that this is happening in the state, especially at a place that is supposed to be a recreation centre.

“I thank God that it happened in the night when people were not around; otherwise, there might have been casualties.

“I urge the state government and engineers working on construction projects in the state to be more dedicated and thorough,” she said.

Also, an Engineer, Mr Okechukwu Uba said: “There is need to critically look at all the construction projects going on in the state.
“This is necessary to avoid unnecessary waste of resources, time and human capacity.

“These projects need to get proper approval from professional hands or bodies; they also need to be properly supervised by qualified and experienced personnel.

“Again, they have to be done systematically and not many things at the same time.
“These projects need to be finished up in a tidy manner and subjected to stress tests where necessary, before being opened to the public,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the state Chairman of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, Mr Emeka Ugoanyawu, had earlier warned against substandard engineering work in the state.

Photo: Beyonce & Jay-Z Renew Wedding Vows

During the opening show of the On The Run II tour last night, the couple - who celebrated their 10th anniversary in April - appeared to reveal that they recently renewed their wedding vows.

Video footage broadcast during the concert at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff showed the pair dressed in white apparently exchanging vows — and it certainly wasn't from their ultra-private 2008 ceremony.

The power couple kicked off their highly-anticipated world tour in the Welsh capital with an electrifying show, which featured lots of home video footage from the Carter household.

Hidden among the montage was a clip of the intimate setting, attended by one-year-old twins Rumi and Sir, as well as older sister, six-year-old Blue Ivy.

Kate Spade's Husband Speaks About Her Suicide

Kate Spade's husband has finally spoken on the fashion designer's suicide -- confirming the two were living apart -- and saying her death came as a total shock to their whole family.

In a statement to the New York Times, Andy Spade says, "Kate suffered from depression and anxiety for many years.

She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives. We were in touch with her the night before and she sounded happy."

He continues, "There was no indication and no warning that she would do this. It was a complete shock. And it clearly wasn’t her. There were personal demons she was battling."

Spade confirms the two were living separately for the last 10 months, but says they still took vacations and had dinners together for the sake of their daughter ... he says they never discussed divorce.

Spade also told the NYT Kate didn't abuse alcohol or have any business problems.

Kate Spade’s Daughter Will Be The Most Hurt In This, Sheryl Underwood Talks About Kate Leaving A Suicide Note

Kate Spade's suicide note will make her death infinitely harder for Kate's daughter and family, according to Sheryl Underwood, who sadly knows exactly what they're going through.

Sheryl had an extraordinarily emotional moment on Wednesday's episode of "The Talk." Her husband killed himself in 1990 after they'd been married for 3 years, and she bravely discussed how it's still affecting her.

As Sheryl put it, "I'm sad for her daughter, for that to be in the note because my husband left a note. And what the note does to the person who is still alive is, it shows that the person who is no longer alive has now had the final word."

Meghan Markle Just Received A Coat Of Arms

Just days after Meghan Markle‘s royal wedding to Prince Harry, the newly minted Duchess of Sussex has received a very special gift: a coat of arms.

The traditional design, customized with colors and symbols, is typically given to the father of the bride just ahead of a royal wedding, but amid the drama surrounding Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, in the lead-up to the royal wedding, the decision has been made to give the coat of arms directly to Meghan herself, which is a total break in royal tradition.

It’s also a break in tradition not to have the bride’s family name represented in the design. Kate Middleton‘s coat of arms not only reflected the Middleton family, but also her mother Carole’s maiden name.

“A Coat of Arms has been created for The Duchess of Sussex. The design of the Arms was agreed and approved by Her Majesty The Queen and Mr. Thomas Woodcock (Garter King of Arms and Senior Herald in England), who is based at the College of Arms in London,” the palace said in a statement Friday.

Meghan worked closely with the College of Arms to create a design that was both personal and representative. The blue background of the shield represents the Pacific Ocean off the California coast, while two golden rays across the shield are symbolic of the sunshine of Meghan’s hometown of Los Angeles.

The three quills represent communication and the power of words, a possible reflection of Meghan’s outspoken activism and her former lifestyle blog, The Tig.

Beneath the shield on the grass is a collection of golden poppies, California’s state flower, and wintersweet, which grows at Kensington Palace — right outside Meghan and Harry’s cozy Nottingham cottage.

Both the California Poppy and the wintersweet were also incorporated into Meghan’s wedding veil (along with embroidered flowers from each of the 53 counties in the Commonwealth).

It is also customary for Supporters of the shield to be assigned to members of the royal family, and for wives of members of the royal family to have one of their husband’s Supporters and one relating to themselves. The Supporter representing Meghan is a songbird with wings elevated as if flying and an open beak, a further representation of the power of communication.

A Coronet has also been assigned to Meghan. It is the Coronet laid down by a Royal Warrant of 1917 for the sons and daughters of the Heir Apparent. It is composed of two crosses patée, four fleurs-de-lys and two strawberry leaves.

Italian Court Summons Parents Over Baby's Controversial Name

Parents of Benito Mussolini, a 14-month old baby, have been summoned to appear in an Italian court over their son’s controversial name, according to a newspaper report.

Young Benito is named after one of his grandfathers, a common enough practise in Italy.
The problem is that the family name is Mussolini, making the child the namesake of the World War II era fascist dictator, no relation.

The unusual name has now come to the attention of a court in the northern city of Genoa, according to the daily Gazzetta di Parma, among concerns for the child’s welfare in later years. For Italians the issue recalls the debate generated by the 2015 film “Il nome del figlio” (“An Italian Name), an Italian adaptation of a French film, in which a man wants to call his son Benito.

The issue also has echoes of a court case in Milan brought against parents who called their child “Blu” (Blue), a name which the local prosecutor took exception to.

Men Docked Over Robbery Of N2m Rolex Watch With Toy Gun In Lagos

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded five unemployed men in Kirikiri Prisons for allegedly robbing a man of a Rolex wrist watch valued at N2 million with a toy gun.

The accused are Ayodele Oluwafemi, 36; Imole Otegbeye, 22; Segun Sunday, 24; Rilwan Abdusalam, 22; and Ezekiel Ayodele, 22.

The men, whose addresses were not provided, are facing a three-count charge bordering on robbery and unlawful possession of firearms.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A. A. Adetunji, who gave the ruling, said the accused should be kept in Kirikiri Prisons pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

She directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the DPP.

The prosecution had earlier told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 3 at 10.00 p. m. along Oshodi Airport Road, Lagos.

Mom-To-Be Pens List Of RULES For Guests Including Helping With Housework If They Must See Her Baby

All parents worry about their children, but one mum-to-be has been mocked for enforcing an extremely strict set of rules ahead of her new arrival.

Mumsnet user Frenchwolf86, believed to be from the UK, came under fire after revealing the 13 rules she expects all visitors to follow when they come to meet her newborn baby.

The guidelines include a change of clothes after smoking and even helping out with housework in return for cuddles with the infant.

But the expectant mother has been mocked by other Mumsnet users, who joked that she wouldn't get many visitors if she enforced the rules.

Frenchwolf86 kicked off the discussion by asking fellow mums if she was being unreasonable for asking people to follow the rules.

She wants prospective visitors to be extra clean, which means washing their hands every time they hold the baby and no visiting if they've recently been ill, she explained.

The mum-to-be also stipulated that feeding time is private, the baby needs to sleep only in her crib and she cannot be posted about on social media.

But perhaps the most extreme rule on the list was her request that visitors help with the housework if they come to spend time with the baby.

Other Mumsnet users were left in stitches at her diva-like demands, with many saying that the baby must be her first.

One said: 'Is this for real? I doubt you'll get any visitors at all if you issue that list of rules! Or is that the idea...? Ah, very clever OP. Keep the in-laws away, eh?'

'Haha this has made me smile! I don’t think you’ll have many visitors,' another posted.

A third said: 'This can't be real No one is this ridiculous.'

I’m Ashamed Nigeria Is Now Used As A Negative Example – Ex-President Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says he is ashamed that Nigeria is now being used as a negative example in the international community.

He cited recent instances when the Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo, mocked the poor state of security in Nigeria and the naira’s weakening status.

Jonathan spoke at the inauguration of the first bridge built by Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, on Friday night.

The former President lamented that things were so bad in the country that Nigeria had lost its respect in Africa.

He said, “He (Ghanaian President) said Ghana is not like Nigeria where cattle roam the streets. At another occasion in the United Kingdom, he made scathing remarks about Nigeria’s currency.

“I feel ashamed as a former President that the president of a neighbouring country used Nigeria as negative examples.

“If a neighbouring African president will use Nigeria to make negative examples, then we as leaders must know certain things are wrong in the country. That means we as leaders must change the way we do things.”

The former President, therefore, urged Nigerian leaders to show serious concern, noting that many things had gone wrong in the country.

Jonathan also advised President Muhammadu Buhari to resist pressure to rig the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State and subsequent elections in the country.

Khloe Kardashian Excludes Tristan's Name From Anniversary Card Sent To Kim

She's been sharing meaningful quotes on social media amid claims her relationship with cheating Tristan Thompson has hit another rough patch.

And Khloe Kardashian gave another hint that all might not be so well with the NBA player on Friday as she left Tristan's name off a card she sent to sister Kim.

The 33-year-old new mom, who welcomed baby True last month with the Cleveland Cavaliers player, sent some roses to Kim for her anniversary with husband Kanye.

The accompanying card read: 'Happy anniversary Kimye. Love always wins!! Love KoKo and True'.

Kim shared snaps of the beautiful blush hued blooms to her Instagram along with a glimpse of the sweet note.

It came after Khloe appeared to allude to her relationship with Tristan on Thursday as she shared some quotes to Instagram.

Posting to Instagram stories, she wrote: 'Something you've been praying for is about to happen for you. You've had enough lessons. You've been patient long enough.

'You've remained strong through many trials and challenges. Nothing broke you. You’re still here standing strong. Now is the time for you to start receiving.'

The passage sounded like it could be an excerpt from her horoscope, or maybe was meant as motivation.

But while Khloe wrote about being 'patient long enough', it doesn't seem as if she has plans to move on from Tristan, having recently welcomed the love rat back into the Cleveland home she shares with their baby daughter True.

However, it's being claimed that the couple are fighting all the time since Khloe decided to forgive the athlete for cheating on her with multiple women while she was pregnant.

'Khloé and Tristan are fighting constantly. All the time,' a source told Us Weekly.

'She doesn’t know how she’s going to rebuild trust in him. She knows her family and friends aren’t supporting him or her right now.'

According to the insider the Kardashian-Jenner clan is fed up with Tristan's behavior.

Kim, 37, recently revealed that the NBA player had blocked her on social media after she called the situation 'so f**ked up' during an appearance on The Ellen Show.

The source continued to dish that Khloe is sick of hearing it from her family and that Kim has been the most protective one of the bunch.

First Photo Of Harry & Meghan After Their Wedding

Newlyweds Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have this afternoon arrived back at Kensington Palace two days after they tied the knot.

The pair were spotted in a car wearing matching sunglasses driving into the royal residence in west London as they begin their married life together.

The new husband and wife looked relaxed with Meghan flashing a smile as they headed back to their home in Nottingham Cottage.

The couple were last seen driving to the reception on Saturday in the grounds of Windsor Castle in a Jaguar E-Type.
