Photos: Serena Williams' Daughter Steals The Show As She Watches Mum's Return To Action

Serena Williams returned to competitive action for the first time since maternity leave this weekend - with the support of one very special fan.

The tennis ace's five-month-old daughter, Alexis Olympia, was in the sellout crowd at the Fed Cup in Asheville, North Carolina on Sunday.

Serena, 36, lost her first official match as she and sister Venus were beaten in a doubles dead rubber by the Netherlands.

The mum-of-one, who gave birth last September and had not played a competitive match since her triumph at the 2017 Australian Open, showed glimpses of her prowess and rust during the 6-2 6-3 loss to doubles specialist Demi Schuurs and world number 165 Lesley Kerkhove.

"It's great. It's her first match so I'm glad she got to see it," Serena said on-court at the US Cellular Arena.

Early in the match Serena showed the effects of her lengthy layoff, perhaps most noticeably when she shanked a routine volley that left her bent over in embarrassment.

But shortly after, the owner on an Open-era record 23 grand slam singles titles drew wild cheers when she confidently stepped to the net and stretched out to drive home a superb backhand volley.

Despite the loss, it was a positive step for Serena, who was bedridden for six weeks from a series of complications, including a pulmonary embolism that led to multiple surgeries, after her daughter was delivered by emergency caesarean section.

Photos: 19 MONTHS OLD Boy Suffers STROKE

A dad has told of the moment his son became one of Britain’s youngest stroke victims - after he diagnosed the condition thanks to a TV advert.

Phil Kerman, 39, said he was horrified when he found his 19-month-old son Ronnie ‘unresponsive’ and ‘floppy’ in his crib.

The tot, who has a twin brother Robert, was rushed to hospital where his and his wife Lisa’s ‘worst nightmare’ was realised.

Medics told the couple that Ronnie had two cysts and a non-cancerous tumour on his brain.

As they wait for an operation to remove the tumour the family are using a secret weapon to help their little boy recover – his twin brother Robert.

Yesterday the toddler visited Ronnie in hospital and went straight up to give him a kiss.

Their proud dad, Philip said: “It was great to see.

“Robert went straight up to him and touched his face and said, ‘Hiya, Hiya’.

“He was trying to give him a kiss. Ronnie smiled from ear to ear and his eyes lit up when he realised it was his brother.

“We’re hoping that brotherly love will help him recover quicker.”

Doctors are now racing against time to drain the cysts - which keep refilling - to save the tot’s life.

The tumour and cysts – described by medics to the family as looking like ‘Mickey Mouse ears’ – are due to be removed later this month.

The toddler has been left partially sighted and the family are waiting for news about the long-term effects.

Dad-of-three Phil, of Hull, East Yorks, said of the moment he saw his son stricken: “I was shocked to see him in his cot crying in pain and unable to move.

“I lifted one arm up and then his leg and they both had gone floppy. I laid him down to crawl because he can’t walk yet and he couldn’t crawl.

“I immediately thought he’d had a stoke and remembered one of those TV adverts and I told my wife Louise to phone an ambulance.”

Mum Louise, 37, added: “I was so scared and shaking so much I couldn’t call the ambulance” and her husband had to take over.

Scans showed ‘a dark patch’ on his brain after being taken to Hull Royal Infirmary on February 2nd.

He was then transferred to Leeds LGI hospital the same day where they confirmed he had suffered a stroke.

Stents have been placed on his brain to drain the cysts as doctors diagnosed Ronnie with Neurofibromatosis - a genetic disorder that causes tumours to form on nerve cells.

Police Declare Abuja Doctor Wanted Over Robbery

A medical doctor has been declared wanted for alleged robbery in Abuja.

Dr. Ola Solomon Jimade, who is currently at large, is said to be the proprietor of Vital Care Hospital in Kubwa area of Abuja.

He is said to be the leader of a robbery and car snatching gang that operates in various areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The police on Tuesday paraded five members of his gang at the FCT Police Command headquarters.

Members of the gang include Sunday Okhomode,  Meshak James,  Amusu Koku, (painter who specialises in changing the colours of stolen vehicles), Kunle Obajemi, (printer who is an expert in changing chassis numbers on the dashboards) and Suleiman Isa (a goldsmith who buys stolen jewelleries from the gang).

The police said four pistols with eight rounds of live ammunition and a face mask which was carefully hidden in a bag in the office of the doctor were recovered during execution of search warrant in the suspect’s hospital.

On how the gang operates, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Sadiq Bello said: “I alerted members of the public last year about the activities of an armed robbery gang whose modus operandi is to gain access into the houses of their targets by blaring their horns at the gates.

“These criminal elements that normally operate in the early hours of the evening, drive in heavily tinted vehicles, when they get to the entrance of their target houses, they will blare the horns of the car, the gatemen will assume that they are family members or friends, the gates will be flung open and they will get inside and rob the occupants of their cars and valuables especially jewelleries.

“I am happy to tell you today that the FCT Command busted one of the gangs responsible for such evil acts.

“The gang is led by one Dr. Ola Solomon Jimade, the proprietor of Vital Care Hospital in Kubwa who is presently on the run. Notwithstanding, five members of the gang have been arrested for the various roles they played in the commission of the crime and they are cooperating with the police.

“The arrest of members of the syndicate was sequel to a reported case of armed robbery incident at a house in Maitama in November 2017 where a BMW X6 vehicle, large quantities of gold and other valuables worth millions of naira were carted away by the syndicate.

“Upon the receipt of the report, the Command through the Specia1 Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) commenced discreet investigation which led to the arrest of the suspects and recovery of the robbed BMW X6 vehicle.

“In the course of investigation so far, five vehicles that have their colours changed have been recovered out of which four have been identified by their respective owners that were robbed at gunpoint in various areas of the city.

“Anybody that knows the whereabouts of Dr. Jimade who is said to be an indigene of Ife Olukotun Community, Yagba East, Kogi State, should quickly alert the nearest police station.”

The plane was heading from the Russian capital to Orsk city, about 1,500km away, near the border with Kazakhstan.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash.

Serena Williams Makes Return To Competitive Tennis

Former world number one Serena Williams made her return to competitive tennis five months after giving birth as she teamed up with sister Venus for the US team in the Fed Cup.

In what was a last-minute change to the billing as the Americans had already won the tie against the Netherlands, the pair lost the dead doubles rubber 6-2 6-3.

But this was never about the scoreline, as demonstrated by the standing ovation and loud cheers that welcomed back the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion.

And among those in the sell-out crowd in Asheville, North Carolina was baby Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.

"It's great. It's her first match so I'm glad she got to see it," Serena said in an on-court interview.

Chinese Police Using Facial Recognition Glasses To Identify Suspects

Chinese police are using dark sunglasses equipped with facial recognition technology to spot criminal suspects.

The glasses, which are being worn by police at a busy train station ahead of the Chinese New Year travel rush, are linked to a central database which contains details of criminal records.

Wearing the technology, police can almost instantly view an individual's personal details, including name, ethnicity, gender and address.

Police at the Zhengzhou East Railway Station have arrested seven people who were suspected of being involved in kidnapping and hit-and-run cases during an operation which began last week.

They have also held another 26 people who were using fake identification cards.

Pictures of the operation, which were published online by the web version of China's People's Daily newspaper, show a female police officer wearing dark black sunglasses which have a small camera attached on the right-hand lens.

The camera is connected by an electronic lead to a hand-held device.

The device has an app where police officers can process images they have taken of suspicious individuals.

The facial information captured by the glasses will be sent back to a database for comparison with the information of suspects on the wanted list.

London City Airport Closed After The Discovery Of An Unexploded Second World War Bomb

London City Airport has been closed after the discovery of an unexploded Second World War bomb, affecting tens of thousands of passengers.

All flights into and out of the airport, in east London, will be stopped on Monday after the device was found nearby in the River Thames on Sunday.

The closure led to the cancellation of more than 100 departures and was affecting up to 16,000 passengers, according to a spokeswoman.

The device was discovered at the George V Dock at about 5am on Sunday during planned work at the airport.

Newham Council said the bomb was a German 500kg fused device and warned work to deal with it would last until Tuesday.

The Metropolitan Police said the airport was shut at 10pm, as officers worked with the Royal Navy to remove the bomb.

Saudi Father ‘Irons Son’s Genitals As Punishment For Getting Sexually Assaulted’

A Saudi Arabian father ironed his son’s genitals after he told him he had been sexually assaulted, a psychologist has claimed. According to local media, the Saudi psychologist was approached by the father after he had ‘punished’ his son.

Dr Hussain Al Shamarani revealed how the father was looking for help and that he genuinely believed he had done the right thing.

The psychologist claimed the man put a hot iron on his son’s genitals after he told him that a group of teenagers sexually abused him. Dr Al Shamarani then shared the tragic case online to show how sex abuse victims in the country are being treated.

‘This man came to ask for my advice, not knowing that his action had already done more damage to the child’s health and mental well-being,’ he said.

‘There are so many similar cases, where parents resort to punishing a child after an assault or simply choose not to come forward to get them help they truly need in the wake of such incidents.’

Soon after the psychologist tweeted the case, people condemned the father’s actions.

One Twitter user wrote: ‘Ignorance is catastrophic. This father knows he won’t be punished for his actions. This is why similar incidents will always recur.’

Another added: ‘Some people are not fit for parenthood.’

‘This is how their brains are programmed, to blame the victim for being harassed,’ another said.

Some called for the authorities to take action and bring in hotlines to professionally deal with similar cases.

Masturbation Kills 100 People In Germany Every Year

As many as 100 people are dying every year in Germany from ‘risky masturbation practices’, a new study has shown.

Oxygen deprivation is the most common cause of death in people who are searching for the ‘ultimate orgasm’, according to forensic examiner, Dr Harald Voss.

The body of a man was reportedly found in Hamburg covered in sliced cheese with pantyhose pulled up over his upper body while he was wearing a diving suit and a raincoat.

He had placed a plastic bag over his head and was sat in front of a heater that was switched on.

Another man was found just before the new year who had died from auto-asphyxiation when he was wrapped in chains in a room where ‘pornographic images were present’.

Women are also known to die from autoerotic asphyxiation, but it is less likely as it’s claimed that they are ‘more cautious’.

However, although the official numbers reported are much lower, Dr Voss predicts that the number of unreported cases are ‘extremely high’ as the relatives of the victims may feel ashamed about what has happened.

Saudi Arabia Kills Another Nigerian For Drug Trafficking,,,

Apparently taking advantage of the delay by Nigeria to intervene in the alleged drug deals undertaken by Nigerians in the country, Saudi Arabia has executed one more Nigerian for drug-related offences.

Impeccable Vanguard sources confirmed that the suspect, whose name was given as Adam Idris Abubakar, was killed by the authorities on Tuesday, bringing the number of Nigerian drug detainees so far executed in the last four months to four.

Two of the suspects were killed last November. A source close to the suspects told Vanguard that the Nigerian Embassy in Riyadh had been informed of the latest execution and that the embassy was embarrassed by the action of the Middleeast country, having begun discussions with them to spare the lives of the suspects.

The killing of Abubakar has reduced the number of Nigerian drug suspects to 13 out of the 15, who are being detained in Medinna Prison in Saudi Arabia.

Last year, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, gave the assurance that the Nigerian Government had begun discussions with the foreign country to save the lives of the embattled Nigerians.

Last week, Onyeama said, “We have made very strong intercessions with the government of those countries to review the cases and of course, not to execute those prisoners. But there is a limit, these are sovereign countries and they have processes and laws.

“As far as Saudi Arabia is concerned, it has been ongoing, we have been intervening at various levels with the Saudi government to spare the lives of those citizens and a number of NGOs have been working with us in order to get those Nigerian citizens off the death row,” the minister said.

I Actually Died But Woke Up On The Way To Mortuary- Julius Agwu

Comic act, Julius Agwu has told Saturday Beats how he died here in Nigeria but woke up as they were conveying him to the MORTUARY. He spoke about how he met his late dad and some dead relations, but his dad was fast to send him back to the world and that was how he raised his hand and people conveying him to the mortuary rushed him back to the hospital. He also spoke about how Okey Bakasi told him it was spiritual, and how his wife, Ebiere has been nothing but a darling! Enjoy...

“The truth is that I would not have been alive if not for God. I died and woke up; I literally died and woke up. I say that authoritatively because I know that I had an encounter with people that I know had died during that period. I saw my father who died about 12 years ago; he was the one that came and chased me back to the world  because it was not my time. I died here in Nigeria but woke up when they were taking me to the mortuary.
That was the first time I had a seizure in my house but my wife stood by me. God would keep on blessing my wife; I believe that God gave me my wife and I always thank him for her. I bless God that she stayed despite everything that happened to me. They were taking me to a mortuary but to God be the glory, my hand moved and that was the point they returned me to the hospital. Here I am today. The encounter made me realise that there is nothing as good as rest. It is very important to sleep. I work so hard and I believe that of all comedians in Nigeria, I am the only one with so many brands, I have Crack Ya Ribs, Laff for Christ’s Sake and Festival of Love.”

Speaking for the first time since his second visit to the hospital over the tumours in his brain, Agwu told Saturday Beats that he had a relapse because he did not rest properly after his first surgery. “What happened was that they did an MRI scan and they detected that I had two growths. They removed a tumour at the back of my head which was the size of a golf ball and the other tumour was close to my brain. They advised me that if they touched the other tumour, it could be fatal. They gave me drugs to shrink the tumour but I did not rest well and that is why it came back last year. I did not rest at all, after my surgery in America, I resumed doing my shows. I thank God for everything.

“The truth is that I am back and better. I just want to use this opportunity to tell the people that God is great and this is a time we should all reflect on our life. I would not lie to you, things are not easy in the country and many people are running away from Nigeria. ‘Crack Ya Rib’ was the first Nigerian show that went to London and after that, everybody started taking their shows there. I thank God that ‘Crack Ya Rib’ paved the way for other shows,” said Agwu.

Being the humour peddler that he is, the funnyman said that some people including his dear friend and colleague, Okey Bakassi, believe that his illness was a spiritual attack simply because he once showed interest to contest as the governor of Rivers State. “We live in a country where people are funny. Remember there was a time I made it public that I wanted to contest as a governor for my state, now, people have advised me not to try it again because they believe that my illness was a spiritual attack. We live in a country where people test your power when you announce that you want to contest for an office. My good friend, Okey Bakassi, told me that the illness was a spiritual attack and pleaded with me not to try it again. He said that there was a time he also thought of contesting for a political office but that something happened to him which he said he would never forget. I just kept on laughing,” he said.

Several Feared Dead In Adamawa Communal Clash

Several people are feared dead in a communal clash in Libbo ward of Shellenge Local Government Area of Adamawa.

Confirming the incident to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, the Councillor representing the ward, Shuaibu Waleed said the clash started when the alleged body of a man from Gomba community of neighbouring Demsa Local Government Area was sighted and the people of Gomba claimed he was killed by a Fulani.

“The bodies of two Fulani were later seen in what looked like a reprisal leading to further attacks.

“I can’t actually say the number of people killed but I knew that we buried five dead bodies and I saw one other dead body burnt beyond recognition inside a mosque while about 200 houses were burnt,” Waheed said.

He said normalcy had been restored and already soldiers and policeman had been drafted to the area.

The Executive Secretary of Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), Mr Haruna Furo, said six communities were affected by the crisis.

“I don’t have details of the incident; all I know is that about six communities were affected.”

Furo said already the agency had dispatched relief materials to the area.

The spokesman of Adamawa Police Command, SP Othman Abubakar, said a unit of MOPOL had been deployed to the area.

“I am yet to get details of casualty but normalcy has been restored to the area. A unit of MOPOL had been sent to the area to maintain peace,” Abubakar said.

Girl, 11, Gives Birth To 14-Year-Old Brother’s Baby

Police are investigating the birth of a baby born to an 11-year-old girl and it's believed her 14-year-old brother is the dad. The young girl, a Bolivian immigrant, gave birth to a boy at a hospital in Murcia, south east Spain, last Friday.

Officers were later called in to probe the identity of the dad.

An investigation resulted in the family stating the child’s older sibling is the father. Sources close to the case said the brother was 13 when his sister fell pregnant.

He will not face any criminal proceedings under Spanish law as he is below the age of criminal responsibility.

DNA tests will now take place to confirm the family’s claims about who the baby’s dad is.

Regional Health authority boss Manuel Villegas described the case as ‘absolutely exceptional’. He added: ‘We have to wait now.

‘An investigation is still ongoing and when everything has been clarified, we’ll see what has happened and if we can help in some way.’

Local reports said there was no evidence to suggest the two siblings had not had consensual sex. Both mum and baby are said to be ‘doing well’.

Britain To Add Naira To List Of Accepted Trade Currencies

Britain’s Export Finance Agency will add the Naira to its list of “pre-approved currencies”, allowing it to provide financing for transactions with Nigerian businesses denominated in the local currency.

The Naira will become one of three West African currencies that UK Export Finance has pre-approved for its programme of funding transactions that promote trade with Britain, it said.

Britain voted to leave the European Union in 2016, which has forced London to rethink its trade ties with the rest of the world. It has said it would start preliminary talks with India about an eventual bilateral trade deal.

The United Kingdom and the EU struck an agreement in December that opened the way for talks on future trade ties.

“This is a clear indication of how much value the UK places on its relationship with Nigeria. It will provide a firm foundation for a significant increase in trade and investment between both countries,” Reuters quoted the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright, to have said in the UK’s credit agency statement.

Leave Now Or Face Jail, Israel Tells African Migrants

Israel began warning thousands of African migrants Sunday that they must leave by the end of March, officials said, under a plan that could see them jailed if they refuse.

On January 3, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced implementation of a plan to deport about 38,000 migrants who had entered the country illegally, mainly Eritreans and Sudanese.

The controversial plan gives them until the end of next month to leave voluntarily or face jail and eventual expulsion.

Immigration authority spokeswoman Sabine Haddad said that officials began issuing migrants letters on Sunday advising them that they had 60 days in which to leave the country voluntarily.

For now, the notices are being given only to men without families, officials said.

Woman Who Cut Baby From Pregnant Neighbour's Womb Sentenced

A woman who killed her pregnant neighbour by cutting the baby from her womb has apologised for the crime as she was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Brooke Crews, who was convicted of murder, told a court she wished she could take the pain away from the victim’s family.

The details of how 22-year-old Savanna Greywind bled to death after Crews cut her were revealed for the first time at a hearing in North Dakota.

Crews, 38, had pleaded guilty to the crime, which officials had previously described as a “cruel and vicious act of depravity".

In tears, Crews read out a statement in court, which said: "There is no excuse. There is no rationalisation. There is nothing."

Ms Greywind, who is of Native American descent and lived in Fargo, disappeared on 19 August when she was eight months pregnant after leaving her family home to visit a neighbour.

Hundreds of people, including groups of Native Americans from nearby areas, helped to search for the missing woman.

After an eight-day search, the nursing assistant’s body was found wrapped in plastic in a river by kayakers, without the baby.

The infant was found at Crews’s house in good health. DNA confirmed it was Ms Greywind’s daughter.

The father of the baby expressed his grief at discovering how his girlfriend, who had lived in Fargo, had died. Ashton Matheny said the facts “tore me apart”.

The victim’s mother said she was pleased that her killer had received the toughest possible sentence.

Norberta Lafontaine-Greywind called the acts against her daughter "beyond evil" in a statement in court, adding that she has suffered nightmares since.

Her husband, Joe Greywind said they were finding it "near impossible" to heal, after the tragic events.

We Have Completely Defeated Boko Haram – Army

Major.-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, says the Nigerian Army has completely defeated the Boko Haram insurgents.

Nicholas stated this during the inauguration of the Nigeria-Cameroun Military Joint Mission on Saturday in Maiduguri.

He disclosed that his troops under the operation DEEP PUNCH II had on Friday dislodged and occupied the insurgents’ tactical ground “Camp Zairo”.

He disclosed that hundreds of insurgents had surrendered and several others fled their enclave while over 100 civilians were rescued.

“My soldiers are in the heart of Boko Haram enclave that is ‘Camp Zairo”, the gallant troops have taken total control of Sambisa Forest.

“We have broken the heart and soul of Shekau’s group, taking over the camp and its environs.

“They are on the run and we are pursuing them to wherever they go. This time around there is no place for escape anywhere.

“We had earlier asked those of them that want to surrender to do so and we are still asking them to come out and surrender otherwise they are going to meet it the hard way”.

Pope Declares Feb. 23 World Fasting, Praying Day

Pope Francis has invited Roman Catholics, all Christians and members of other religions to observe Feb. 23 as a day of prayer, fasting and initiatives for peace.

Francis while addressing tens of thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square for his weekly blessing,  on Sunday urged everyone to ‘say no’ to violence and conflict. According to him, the appeal is  because of the “tragic prolonging” of conflicts around the world. Feb. 23 is a Friday in the first full week of the Christian season of Lent, during which fasting from food and extra acts of charity are encouraged as a sign of penitence.

He said “everyone, in their own consciences, before God, should ask ‘what can I do for peace?’”

“Surely, we can pray but not only: each one of us can say ‘no’ to violence in their own way, because victories obtained through violence are false victories, while working for peace benefits all,” he said.

He specifically invited non-Catholics and non-Christians to join the initiative in any way they saw fit, “but all together”.

Francis said the prayers and fasting should be offered in a particular way for the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan. South Sudan has been hit by a prolonged civil war and humanitarian crisis. The Democratic Republic of Congo has been hit by unrest this month following the shooting of protesting pro-democracy churchgoers opposed to President Joseph Kabila.

According to her, the Town Union President of the community (names withheld) had reported that upon getting information from a hunter who discovered the lifeless body of the deceased, he later went to the forest with the elder brother of the deceased, Peter Onyibe to see the corpse for himself.

“But I wonder why a person should commit suicide and the family did not suspect any foul play; unless the family knew that their sister was having problem and as a result of that, they were suspecting she would committed suicide.

“They should have also been eager to know what led to her committing suicide. There is a saying that life begins at 40, so someone taking her life at 40 sounds strange.”

The mouth piece of the command further explained that the corpse has been released to the family for burial since no suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Ex Imo State Gov Ikedi Ohakim Threatens To Protest Naked Against Non-Payment Of Imo Judges

Ex-governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, has threatened to protest naked against the non-payment of judges in the state, Guardian reports. He said the high court judges had not been paid for about 16 months, describing the situation as ‘scandalous.’

Ohakim alleged that the state government had also failed to pay about N7 billion, which the courts ordered it to pay to those concerned. He said unless the issue was resolved, his protest would hold along Wethdral Road, Owerri, the state capital, especially as he has no pending case in the courts.

The ex-governor disclosed his plans in an interview with journalist at his residence in Prefab, Owerri, the state capital.

Ohakim said, he could not watch as the judges continue to suffer or die because of their inability to afford hospital bills. Ohakim said he was using the media to inform the Inspector General of Police; Idris Abubakar about his planned protest, which, he said, would hold in March 2018.

Britain To Shut Doors Against Nigerian Looters, Others

Britain is in the process of shutting its doors against public treasury looters from Nigerian and other parts of the world as a new law to clamp down on money laundering goes into effect.

Officials estimate that around £90 billion ($127 billion, 102 billion euros) of illegal funds are laundered through Britain every year, including money stolen from the Nigerian treasury.

Now officials will use new unexplained wealth orders (UWOs), which came into effect last week, to seize suspicious assets and hold them until they have been properly accounted for, the Times of London reported yesterday, quoting Ben Wallace, Security and Economic Crime Minister.

Wallace said Russian oligarchs suspected of corruption will be forced to explain their wealth.

Wallace said he wanted the “full force of the government” to come down on corrupt politicians and international criminals using Britain as a haven.

“When we get to you we will come for you, for your assets and we will make the environment that you live in difficult,” he said.

Wallace spoke 24 hours after Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun said Nigeria and some foreign countries, including the UK, have started the automatic exchange of tax information (AETI), on overseas assets owned by Nigerians.

It added that “10 bodies are reported to have washed up on Libyan shores”, including two Libyan nationals and eight Pakistanis.

The agency has repeatedly issued warnings over the extreme dangers facing migrants who try to reach Europe via the so-called central Mediterranean route, which connects Libya to Italy.
